In every town there are songwriters of many types. There are those who sing songs of themselves, those who sing to the audience, and those who sing to the creator. (The power of the song has a lot to do with the direction of the lyric. )

In Charleston, SC there is a wonderful, humble songwriter named David Benrexi. David is known for his efforts toward community in performing at local Open Mics, supporting fellow songwriters, and being an all around kind fellow. Co-creator of MUFIC: Musical Fiction Alliance of America, he and some close friends and musicians host interviews and internet video performances featuring local artists. This sort of community effort helps give musicians another outlet, and association to help make their career progress.

It is important to note that David's songwriting seems intimate, heartfelt, and convicted. He sings of his savior, Jesus, and the love that has found him. Songs of his youth and the experiences therein fill his binder of countless original works. David has the experience and skill to make each song as powerful as the last with his great chord voicing, spot-on rhythm and love for his audience. It is evident that David has compassion in mind and heart when he performs his works, and his faith is such that he knows his music speaks to the hearts of the listener.

A choice of the listener to HEAR what is said.

Wings Weekly asked David Benrexi seven questions:

1. Why Music? DB: I believe I was chosen by God to hear music, see music, think music, live music, and breathe music. From my earliest recollections I have always heard music, been drawn to music, and wanted to make music.

2. What is Profit? DB: Profit is the difference between what you invest in something and what you get out of it. If your increase exceeds your investment, you have made a profit. But this principle applies to everything we do. If we invest our eyes and ears into the right things, what we see and hear will be worth more than the effort we put into seeing and hearing. Our value will increase. Finally, we can look at profit in terms of what we offer others who spend time with us, or listen to our music. Are we giving them something that is worth their investment of time? Are we adding value to their life?

3. Which do you prefer? Birds or lizards, and why? DB: I prefer birds because they fly and they sing. I don't have wings to fly, but I can sing and my spirit soars when I do. Lizards promise I will save 15% or more on car insurance as if they really know what I pay. (I have to interject here to say that David made me laugh so hard with this part of the response.)

4. Live or prerecorded music, and why? DB: I will take the purest music in whatever form it comes. When live music has the same quality and passion that playing for an audience of one does, that's the best of all, but distractions and poor sound quality make a live performance forgettable.

5. Do you prefer breakfast, lunch or dinner? DB: The time of day doesn't matter. The state of hunger, the quality of the offering, and the company matter more. Good music, whether played on the radio, the stereo, or in my mind makes every meal a feast.

6. What stops you in your tracks (musically)? DB: Someone who is beautiful playing something I have never heard before with precision and passion. Also, a magnificent instrumental solo midway through a song with a strong and clear message.

7. If every ear would hear your song: about what would you sing? I would sing about the Creator of the Universe, the one who gave us all the building blocks to be creative and make music. My message would be one of profound appreciation. Even before I knew him, our Creator was helping me get through all the days of my life and using music to encourage and inspire me.

Wings Weekly would like to thank David Benrexi for his time and thoughtfulness in answering these questions. Furthermore, thanking him for wearing the armor that allows him to sing songs of truth for the listeners... even in dark places.
