In a world of rowdy, haughty musicians clawing at one another to be the best there are some who stand out for being reserved. Modern lyrics have been belittled and are now focused on trivial things, material items and pleasures of the flesh. You can go nearly anywhere and expect to hear a song about the new Rolls Royce or "Sippin' Sizzurp," but everyone stops and stares when a song is sung about pain and perseverance. About finding your way. When a song is sung from the heart about the things of the heart people notice the change and they listen. In a world of artists exploiting our ignorance and slumber, there are still those who sing of heart and compassion.
Such are the songs of Summerville, SC local Matthew Crissman.
Matthew first made public emergence in the Summerville area at a couple local open mic nights. He approached the scene from the background, observing the performers from afar and toying with the idea that he would perform his own music. He didn't even show up with a guitar at first. It was one week at Summerville's Cuppa Manna that Matthew Crissman finally sang... flooring the room with his soft vocal and powerful ability to speak words that the average man is too fearful to say.
"There's a light inside you. Only you can see."
Right away the listeners knew that there was something special taking place in the air. The room could feel pain and sorrow, but presented on a platter of Hope. There was finally a musician who sang truth in struggle and didn't compile lyrics to acquire fans. What we all heard was the sound and songs of heart.
Shortly after getting started, Matthew began to meet the people who would encourage him to make it to the next plateau. He met the artists who would accompany him in his band projects and soon found his way to Hybrid Audio Solutions in Charleston, SC. Matthew quickly began the recording of his song, "A Light Inside You," and later released a great music video to accompany it.
Wings Weekly asked Matthew seven questions to get to know him a little better:
1. Why Music? MC: Music to me is a way for everyone to communicate their feelings; happy, sad, angry. Most everyone has a song they turn to when they're feeling a certain emotion; at least I do. Music has helped me deal with a lot of bad times no matter what, it is always there I couldn't imagine my life without both playing and listening...
2.What is profit? MC: This is a random question. According to the dictionary profit is a financial gain.
3. Do you prefer birds or lizards and why? MC: I prefer birds because they are made to fly...
4. Live or pre recorded and why? MC: I love both to be honest. If I had to choose... live. There is something about the energy that comes with it. You can literally feel the crowd shift from browsing their phone to really coming together and feeling as one. Most everyone loves a good sing along, it just makes you feel good. On the other hand some songs hit you right to the core and can change the way you view things. I really love music that I can tell the artist put their heart into. I love that about live music. You can see it up close and personal...
5.Which do you prefer; breakfast lunch or dinner? MC: I'ma go with idnner...
6. What stops you in your tracks musically? MC: The basics. I am self taught and have never had a real teacher to correct any mistakes. I am sure I have a few bad habits or things I could correct.
7. If every ear could hear your song, about what would you sing? MC: If every ear could hear my song...i would sing about overcoming obstacles. I would sing about owning who you are, the good and the bad. Most importantly, I would sing about love... We all owe it to ourselves and to others to love as much as we can...
Wings weekly would like to thank Matthew Crissman for his thoughtful answering of this questionnaire and wish him the best in his future endeavors. Check out his work at the links below and keep supporting local music.
